Big weekend for McNicholas Football

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - It's a big weekend for football and football related activities for McNicholas High School.

The Catholic high school that serves Mt. Washington, Anderson township and points beyond has made it deep into the Diviosn III playoffs.  They are in the semifinals Saturday against Bishop Watterson High School, playing at the field of Clayton Northmont High School northwest of Dayton at 7 p.m.  A pair of student buses will roll out of McNicholas at 5 p.m.

Whatever game ends up being last for McNick will also be the last for Head Coach Steve Klonne.  The St. X. and XU grad is retiring after a 40-year career that includes stints as an assistant or head coach at Mt. Healthy, Elder, Turpin, and Moeller.  This year he was able to enjoy his 200th win and the inauguration of a new home field.

The Freshman Football Team won't be on the field this weekend, but they will still be working for McNicholas.  Between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Youth league teaches values over football

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Fights involving parents and coaches in youth sports seem like they are happening more often.

For that reason, Ron Jennings started the Lakota Youth Football League in West Chester. The league is based on four key principles: Faith, family, school, and then football - in that order.

"We have an epidemic going on across the country that is like that," said Jennings. "We forget that this is just youth football and basically it gets at a win at all cost and we'll do anything. We'll scream and yell. We'll attack the refs verbally. We'll attack the other coaches verbally and we have to stop that."

Dave Wood has been officiating youth sports for over 35 years.
