Miami U. now the Cradle of Coaches - officially

Miami U. now the Cradle of Coaches - officially

OXFORD, OH – A phrase that has long been used to describe Miami University’s athletic program has now been trademarked, having been officially recognized by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Two years ago, Christopher Wilson of the University's Office of General Counsel began the legal process for Miami's Intercollegiate Athletics through its local trademark counsel, Kremblas & Foster of Reynoldsburg, Ohio. The trademark application serial number 77672647 was filed on Feb.18, 2009 and was registered on Feb.21.

"The federal registration of a trademark involves a lengthy process," said Wilson, "but if the Trademark Office issues the registration, then the University owns the nationwide right to control the use of the trademark, including obtaining significant damages and attorneys' fees from infringers."

Unlike many college slogans and nicknames, the origin of “The Cradle of Coaches” is known down to the exact day.
