Free recycling event for electronic waste in West Chester

WEST CHESTER, OH (FOX19) - A free recycling event is being held in West Chester on Saturday, April 20 9am - 1pm.

The event is exclusively for recycled waste and will take place at St. John Church on Cincinnati-Dayton Road.

Acceptable Electronics Include: Cables, CD-ROM drives, cellular phones, circuit boards, computer speakers, CPUs, CRT monitors*, docking stations, DVD players, fax machines, hard drives, keyboards, laptops, LCD monitors*, mainframes, mice, microwaves, modems, PDAs, personal copiers, printers, processor chips, scanners, servers, speakers, tape and disc drives, telephones, televisions*, terminals, UPS battery back-ups, VCR players, and more!
Unacceptable Electronics Include: Appliances, ballasts, batteries, and light bulbs.

A portion of the material proceeds collected will benefit Boy Scouts of America Troop 940. Donantions are welcome.

COLUMBUS, OH The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) will host an open house on Friday, Feb. 15 to educate lake users and community members on a proposed lake management plan for Acton Lake, which is located in Preble and Butler counties. 

After reviewing public input gathered over the past year, ODNR is considering a lake management proposal that would allow watercraft powered by more than 10 horsepower to access the lake, provided that they only operate at idle speed.

The open house will offer information about the regulatory process as well as provide lake users and area residents with an opportunity to submit written comments, ask questions and discuss lake issues with representatives from ODNR.

Christmas trees provide mulch for local parks

WEST CHESTER, OH (FOX19) - Christmas trees are being accepted for recycling through the end of January at two West Chester parks. The trees will be chipped and mulch will be used along the trails in your local parks.

Trees should be cleared of all decorations and should not be wrapped in plastic. Artificial trees are not accepted.

Trees will be accepted at Keehner Park on Barret Road, near the tennis courts; and at Beckett Park, off Union Centre Boulevard, in the parking area just before the gates. Please look for signs designating the correct drop-off spot.

The recycling collection is for a limited time and is only for live holiday trees. Other yard debris is not accepted.

Butler County extends free program to dispose of hazardous waste

BUTLER COUNTY, OH (FOX19) - Butler County residents now have more opportunities to recycle household hazardous waste (HHW) and Freon appliances.

The Butler County Recycling and Solid Waste District has extended its long-term HHW and Freon appliance programs and is hosting a one-day event for HHW in October. In addition, the District is holding its annual one-day tire recycling event in November.

The Freon appliance collection program, which began in April, has been extended until Nov. 30, 2012. Residents can contact Unwanted Appliances at 1-888-886-9268 to schedule a curbside pick-up of their Freon appliance(s). Accepted items include refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers. There is a limit of two “like” appliances per household.

WEST CHESTER, OH (FOX19) - The public is invited to drop off unwanted household electronic equipment for recycling at the St. John Church parking lot in West Chester from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 20.  

Recyclable electronic equipment includes: keyboards, cables, speakers, laptops, CD-ROM drives, telephones and other items.  A complete list of acceptable electronic equipment is available at www.2trg.com.  Most equipment will be accepted for free.  CRTs and monitors will be accepted for a $10 fee, and TV consoles for $20.  Appliances, ballasts, batteries, and light bulbs will not be accepted.

This recycling event is being held to raise money for Boy Scout Troop 940.

West Chester hosts class on severe weather safety

WEST CHESTER, OH (FOX19) - West Chester Township is offering an evening class in emergency preparedness as part of its ongoing West Chester University – community education program.  

The class will focus on severe weather and will feature a speaker from The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) who will discuss early predictions of severe weather. NOAA is the federal agency that includes the National Weather Service.

The class is designed to provide people in the township with the information needed to keep families and businesses safe during an emergency.  The West Chester University: Emergency Preparedness – Severe Weather class will be offered Tuesday, May 29 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the West Chester Library, 9363 Centre Pointe Drive.

The class will provide participants with the tools they need to plan for widespread community emergencies related to severe weather, as well as smaller crises in their homes and/or neighborhoods.

Some SW Ohio counties among tops for turkeys

COLUMBUS, OH (FOX19) - Four of the Tri-State's 8 counties were among the state's top ten for turkeys taken on the first day of the spring turkey season, and among the top 15 for the number of turkeys taken per square mile.

Ohio hunters harvested a preliminary total of 2,227 bearded wild turkeys on the first day of the spring turkey-hunting season, which is open statewide through May 20, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. In 2011, a preliminary total of 2,646 wild turkeys were killed on opening day.

Top counties for wild turkeys killed on Monday were: Ashtabula-93, Coshocton-79, Tuscarawas-78, Muskingum-74, Guernsey-69, Adams-62, Highland-57, Knox-56, Brown-55 and Clermont-54.
