Dark clouds over West Chester

WEST CHESTER, OH (FOX19)  This photo by Brian Cook shows dark clouds looming over Union Center boulevard Sunday afternoon.

The clouds heralded a storm that brought heavy rain, high but not severe winds, and lightning strikes that caused fires in several places, including a newer home in Ross Township.

The good news was that the storm brought an end to the excessive heat, and a large drop in humidity levels.

Elderly man arrested for trying to bring drugs into jail

LEBANON, OH (FOX19) - An 85-year-old man is behind bars after police say he tried to sneak drugs into his grandson, an inmate at the Warren Correctional Institution.

Richard J. Heritz, of West Chester, is charged with attempting to convey drugs onto the grounds of a detention facility and possessing criminal tools.

Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers and Department of Rehabilitation and Correction investigators obtained information that Heritz would be attempting to convey drugs to his grandson during a scheduled visit.

When Heritz arrived for his visit, troopers confronted him and he voluntarily surrendered one large package containing approximately 22 grams of suspected marijuana. It's estimated the pot is worth, on average, $23 per gram in Ohio's correctional institution.

Heritz is being held in the Warren County Jail. If convicted, he could face up to seven years in prison and a $15,000 find.

WEST CHESTER, OH (FOX19) - Friends remember Jordan Day as an avid golfer, on the varsity team at Lakota East High School. Their first golf meet was set for Thursday, that's now been canceled as a community mourns their loss.

"[He] loved golf, just really hard worker, was our leader, was one of the best golfers I think in the state," Coach Combs said.

Combs says Day's teammates are leaning on each other as they try to come to terms with day's untimely death.

Day would have been a junior at Lakota East and had just moved from California last summer.

"He was a very good student, well liked by his peers and certainly going to be a tremendous loss for our school," said Lakota East Principal Dr.
