Police get their hands on palm prints

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - For decades police have been collecting and cataloging fingerprint evidence. Now police are increasingly collecting and saving palm prints, but until now, police in Ohio haven't had a practical way to share or search those prints.

That has changed. The Ohio Attorney General's Office says upgrades to the AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) database, which stores fingerprints, now allow it to store palm prints and make those available for police to search them.

The State of Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is now collecting palm prints along with fingerprints provided by local police.
