Pepper hosts grand opening of Obama campaign office in Mason

MASON, OH (FOX19) – Local supporters of President Barack Obama gathered Tuesday night for the grand opening of a new Organizing for America-Ohio (OFA) office in Mason, with former Hamilton County Commissioner David Pepper as the guest speaker.

This is the fourth OFA office in the Tri-state, with locations already in place in Cincinnati, Northern Hamilton County, and Middletown, along with other Ohio field offices in Warren, Defiance, Mentor, Lima, Bowling Green, Toledo, Beavercreek, Youngstown, New Philadelphia, Athens, Parma, Columbus, Dayton, Shaker Heights and Chillicothe.

OFA says they have been actively engaging supporters in communities across Ohio since 2009. Since the launch of the President’s re-election campaign, volunteers have been organizing in their communities with grassroots planning sessions, house parties, voter registration drives, phone banks and canvasses.

The Mason office is at 108 W. Main Street.

Visitation draws hundreds for fallen Marine J.P. Huling

SYCAMORE TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19)- The visitation for Marine Sergeant J. P. Huling of West Chester attracted hundreds of community members, students, friends and family at his alma mater, Moeller High School in Kenwood.

The visitation and funeral are open to all to the public but the family requested the media remain across the street from Moeller during the visitation.

Moeller high school senior Michael Riney says he even though he did not know Sgt. Huling he wanted to come and honor their Moeller connection.

"I'm starting to understand more and more the brotherhood that goes with Moeller. I understand J.P. was a Moeller grad so I was just coming down here to support another Moeller grad and brotherhood," says Riney.

Also in attendance to escort the family from the funeral home to the visitation was Ohio's patriot Guard Riders, a national group of bikers and veterans dedicated to supporting the family of fallen soldiers.

Lakota East teacher heads to court

BUTLER COUNTY, OH (FOX19)- On Monday, the Butler County Sheriff Office reported that they were investigating the theft of some Lakota East prom money.

Heather Schoell-Schroeder, age 45, of Liberty Township, was issued a summons on Monday on charges of misdemeanor theft. She was a teacher at Lakota East.

Police say they got a report last week that said Schoelle-Schroeder had sold prom tickets in her classroom, and that money was never deposited into the prom account.

Her hearing is scheduled for sometime in June.

HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) - Local letter carriers to deliver the mail six days a week, but this week they’re counting on their customers to help them deliver a special package to Shared Harvest Foodbank.

For the 18th consecutive year, members of the National Association of Letter Carriers in Butler County are gearing up for “Stamp Out Hunger” – the largest one day food drive in America.

Members of NALC branches 426 and 43, along with rural letter carriers, will be collecting non-perishable food donations when they deliver mail Saturday, May 12. The contributions will be delivered to Shared Harvest’s warehouse in Fairfield for sorting and processing and will then be taken to local food pantries, soup kitchens or shelters during the summer months.

Lakota East teacher resigns over missing prom money

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19)- A Lakota staff member tells FOX19 that a Lakota East High School teacher has resigned in connection with missing prom money.

The Butler County Sheriff's Office said an investigation was launched into the case and a suspect has been identified, but no charges have been filed.

A spokesperson for Lakota Local Schools released this statement Thursday to FOX19:

"Lakota administration has provided a report to the Butler County Sheriff's office indicating that $760 may be missing from the Lakota East High School Prom Fund. Lakota is reviewing this situation."

A report filed with the sheriff's department alleges the teacher was selling prom tickets from her classroom and not putting the money in the prom fund.

Lakota East's prom was held April 28 at the Savannah Center in West Chester Township.

West Chester Police ask for help identifying theft suspect

WEST CHESTER, OH (FOX19)- West Chester Police need your help finding a man they say stole credit cards from a woman's car as she paid for gas at the Speedway on Tylersville Road and I-75. 

The theft happened on Wednesday, April 18, 2012.

Police say the suspect later used the credit cards in the Dayton area and purchased approximately $2,200 worth of merchandise.

West Chester Board of Trustees approves new contract for firefighters

WEST CHESTER, OH (FOX19)- The West Chester Township Board of Trustees approved a three-year contract with fire lieutenants and firefighters represented by the IAFF.

The new contract affects 57 full-time fire lieutenants and firefighters and will provide an annual 2.5 percent cost of living increase in each year of the agreement. The increases represent an annual compounded cost of about $155,000.

The contract with the West Chester IAFF expired at the end of last year. The fire department continues to remain within the means of a levy approved by voters in 2006.
